The swimsuit, as a piece of attire designed specifically for bathing, has recent pedigree. It was first popularised in ancient Greece and Rome.

Nude bathing was acceptable in societies such as Athens. The surviving artwork indicates that women sometimes wore a two-piece outfit - today's bikini.

After the Roman Empire fell, and the church leaders enforce law and morality, the bathhouses were prohibited. In its place came the Dark and Middle Ages and the rise of more prudish (predominantly Christian) ideas of propriety. From this point the history of the swimsuit enters a long era of stasis, and at the end of 18th Century public bathing and the swimsuit became popular again.
